Ask Dr. Gottsegen: What is TMJ therapy?

TMJ is an acronym that we at Gottsegen Orthodontics use to describe the temporomandibular joint, or jaw joint. This joint is one of the most complicated in the body, and, in fact, is the only joint in the body capable of both rotary and sliding function (ginglimo-arthrodial). TMD, or dysfunction of the temporomandibular joints, is one of the most common problems we face in today's high-stress environment. These problems are commonly related to painful spasms of the muscles that act upon the joints and/or to structural changes within the joints themselves. Symptoms of TMD can range from pain in the facial and neck musculature to popping and/or locking of the jaw joint.

While treatment of such conditions can often be challenging and multifaceted, we take pride in our long-established success rate in helping people get out of chronic pain and suffering. Our goal in these cases is to create a new reality that is infinitely more tolerable, if not 100% pain-free. In all but the most severe cases, this can be achieved on a conservative, non-surgical basis. We would be happy to evaluate you for these problems to ascertain your individual likelihood for successful therapeutic intervention.

Our staff invites you to take the TMJ survey to see if you require treatment. Please print both sheets, fill them out, and mail them to our office or bring them with you to
your consultation appointment at one of our offices in New Orleans and Metairie.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dr. Brad Gottsegen, helping you understand cavities

At Gottsegen Orthodontics, we know one word nobody wants to hear when they visit their general dentist is Cavity! That’s right, the dreaded cavity; but what exactly is a cavity and how do you get one? A cavity is a hole that develops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

So, what causes a cavity? A cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed.

Yes, cavities can be repaired by your dentist here in New Orleans or Metairie, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Brad Gottsegen:

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily
• Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)
• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach
• Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat or drink
• Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up

If you don't have a general dentist, let Dr. Brad or our staff know, and we can provide a few references!

Dr. Gottsegen wants to know: what's on your fall reading list?

It's almost fall, which means back to school time for most of our patients at Gottsegen Orthodontics. Today, we wanted to remind all our patients about the importance of reading.

In addition to textbooks, it's always great to pick up a great novel or a comic book. Today, we thought we’d ask: What's on YOUR fall reading list? What are some of your all-time favorites?

Out of ideas for great fall reads? Ask us for suggestions, and Dr. Gottsegen and staff would be happy to provide a few suggestions. You may also ask a local librarian in New Orleans or Metairie for some ideas ...or check out these fall reading ideas that we came across today, courtesy of Borders.

Happy reading! Be sure to share with us your fall picks or your all-time favorites on our Facebook page!
